Talk:Promotory fort
Is this spelling ("promotory") correct? It looks suspiciously like a typo for "promontary". seglea 07:59, 6 Mar 2004 (UTC)
I've now checked in OED and there is no record of this spelling even as an error or regional variant. A Google search suggests that it occurred as a typo in an early 20th century issue of Webster's, in its definition of "Naze", and has propagated as a result. I am going to risk changing the spelling throughout. If anyone changes it back, please give an authority for the spelling here, to avoid repeated shuttling - thanks. seglea 08:04, 6 Mar 2004 (UTC)
I checked, and it is indeed promontory, which makes sense etymologically as well. Sorry!! I could have sworn.... --Yak 10:07, Mar 8, 2004 (UTC)
