[edit]What about Maynard's book Baby Love? - bbh — Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.130.151.198 (talk) 23:35, 12 March 2005 (UTC)
This page is obviously written by Maynard herself. Isn't there some sort of policy against this? --75.137.185.150 (talk) 02:35, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
Balance and completion?
[edit]I've flagged for POV, because of numerous unsubstantiated claims. Joyce Maynard wrote posts about herself in disguise? Where? A single New York Times piece "ironically provided Maynard with a greater readership than ever before"? Considering her own novel had just become a Nicole Kidman movie, I sincerely doubt that. Cites for these are more are very much needed.
Also, as written this seems to be missing several of her books. If anyone has the time, could they fill out the bibliography? -- P L E A T H E R talk 16:41, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
BLP
[edit]- " She had numerous affairs; one of her former boyfriends called her "the most self-obsessed person I've ever met. She gives narcissism a bad name."
This would seem to violate BLP policy even though it is sourced. NewJerseyLiz Let's Talk 18:34, 17 August 2013 (UTC)
- I removed it. Seems like gossip from an unnamed person.--Canoe1967 (talk) 05:19, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you, Canoe1967. It seemed inappropriate. I think the remarks about her adoption is quite catty as well. I don't mean to whitewash and present a perfect portrait of Maynard but this information doesn't seem very valuable since the adoption only lasted two years. Liz Let's Talk 21:50, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
- I already found early text that explains this development in her personal life in a more neutral way. Liz Let's Talk 21:55, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
- You are very welcome.--Canoe1967 (talk) 03:36, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Breaking up with Salinger
[edit]I've been thinking about what sort of information should be in an encyclopedia entry, as opposed to a book review, a magazine or newspaper article, an academic essay, or a TV interview with Oprah.
Although entries like this one are are called "biography" entries, they're not really biographies. They are not nearly as detailed, analytical, or probing. They don't have to tell a story, and probably shouldn't. They are not really meant to be a summary of a person's life. Therefore the information needs to be less personal rather than more. I'm also mindful of what the documentation says about privacy, particularly in Biographies of Living Persons. Err on the side of privacy. Better to have less info rather than more.
I've been reading, again, the book Salinger by Shields and Salerno, which is the most complete published account of Salinger that exists. It would be speculation on my part to say with certainty the cause of Maynard's departure from Salinger's home. It was a complicated situation, far too complicated to know from the outside. Regardless, these are matters beyond the concern of an encyclopedia editor, who need only say that the relationship ended.
