Sorbara sppts McGuinty, 1996

[edit]

From Eye Weekly's Queen's Park correspondent, 13 November 1997:

"Sorbara, who supported McGuinty at the Liberal leadership convention last December, said he wasn't consulted before Cordiano was fired and said he would have advised against it [...]"

I suppose it doesn't clarify whether he supported McGuinty *on the first ballot*, though. Anyone know the answer? CJCurrie 00:00, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Sorbara Leadership Rumours

[edit]

Regarding the leadership rumours, that was mostly spin started by the PCs. It was a major talking point for the PCs all through 2001-2003. They were moderately successful in getting the media to at least buy that Sorbara wanted to be Premier one day.

This National Post story from 2002 shows that spin from the PCs:

"Is the Liberal Party president the Doug Flutie of the Grit caucus? A starter kept on the bench by forces beyond his control?

Tories claim he has an eye on the leader's job, so Dalton McGuinty is keeping him at arm's length." Post, May 25, 2002.

You can see how the evidence of the "leadership ambitions" charge changes and sometimes contradicts to fit the circumstances.

Whenever asked about running for leader one day, Sorbara has flatly denied any interest in the job. That's very different from Martin, who openly admitted interest in running for leader after the incumbent left (and later on, even if the incumbent wouldn't leave.)

As a matter of fact, Sorbara went much further in dismissing any idea he has leadership ambitions in an Ian Urquhart interview:

"Sorbara flatly denied he is feathering his own leadership nest and offered to bet me $100,000 that, if and when McGuinty steps down, he will not run for the job. I declined the bet." Toronto Star. May 7, 2003.

So, the rumours are documented as spin by the PCs. Sorbara denies he will ever run for leader repeatedly and vigourously in the media.

Just goes to show you that repeating a charge enough times can make it "public knowledge".
