Assessment Comment
[edit]I'm assessing the article on the genus as mid importance and consider, unless convinced otherwise by specific articles, the species articles to be low importance. If you feel otherwise feel free to say so. Regards.Gallador (talk) 16:59, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Authority for Cercopithecus?
[edit]Who named the genus Cercopithecus? This article and ITIS both say "Linnaeus, 1758" [1]. However, I find that a bit implausible since
- in the 10th edition of Systema Naturae Linnaeus put all the monkeys in Simia;
- if he named the genus you would have expected him to place a species in it, but none of the species currently in Cercopithecus was placed there by Linnaeus
- the type species was originally Simia diana
So there's a puzzle here. Gdr 13:29:37, 2005-08-05 (UTC)
- Linnaeus named it as a group within Simia in SN 10. See Wikispecies which comes from Groves. - UtherSRG (talk) 13:57, August 5, 2005 (UTC)
- Yes. Simia was suppressed by Opinion 114 of the ICZN, S. diana Linnaeus was designated the type in 1926. Ucucha|... 14:30, 5 August 2005 (UTC)
