Talk:Conversion Table:cm-inches
The layout of the table is ugly for a start. Also why do we want such a page anyway? Just multiply/divide by 2.54. -- SGBailey 22:46 Dec 23, 2002 (UTC)
The point of teh table is for quick refrence, also some other encylopeadias have it so why not wikipedia? -fonzy
A link to an online converter would be better. --mav
Maybe, or maybe i will move it to that wiki soruceburg project. - fonzy
- Come to think of it, it would be real neat if we could make HTML forms on sourceburg. That way we can make our own converters. --mav
I have some knowledge of inches since I am a resident of Europe and since I am a mechanical engineer, but yards are too difficult for me to calculate with them by heart. And this kind of table is okay for me otherwise.
I don't know that the precise conversions are of much value since you'd need a calculator to work them out anyway. The results always look suspiciously specific. I believe the audience could make much better use of some rough and ready rules for converting from one system to another, near equivalents rather than precise measurements:
liter 2 pints meter yard (or 1.1 yard for fanatics) 30 cm foot km just over half a mile 3 miles just under 5 km
fahrenheit to celsius -- subtract 30 divide by 2 celsius to fahrenheit == multiply by 2 add 25
These "rules" could be augmented by "round down" or "round up" as appropriate. Ortolan88
- Change the above to "litre - 2 pints" or "half litre - pint" -- Tarquin
The only international conversion rule I'm really sure of is "A pint's a pound the world around". Ortolan88
- That's got me baffled. (you mean a pint weighs a pound? The Imperial pint is not the same as the US pint...) Giving rough conversion is an excellent idea :-) -- Tarquin
- Joke :=) I do think we should have a page of rough conversions. Ortolan88
