Seperate list for designers and houses

[edit]

I think there should be a list for houses too. I sorted the list of designers alphabetically, please do edit if you disagree. -- Unnamed

Not happy at all. My parents are going phsyco as none of the links for the australian fashion designers work and i cannot get any information, therefore i cannot do my project. Can this please be remedied?

It is funny, me and my friends names are on here........ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.188.28.2 (talk) 21:45, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that there should be a separate list. There are some very good resources out there like eDesignCafe.com which do not fit into these categories and surely worth more to a freelancer — Preceding unsigned comment added by Totlani (talkcontribs) 19:59, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Shawn Carter

[edit]

The article for Shawn Carter is now a redirect to a musician. Was some original content blanked? Cbdorsett (talk) 10:44, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

IDIOT! Shawn Carter is Jay-Z who designs Rocawear. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.95.150.205 (talk) 03:06, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification of criteria for inclusion

[edit]

Assuming that this is a list of high end fashion houses and designers I'll assume that this excludes mainstream high street. Sorry, but Jane Norman, French Connection and Ted Baker are NOT fashion designer, nor are they high end fashion houses, they are chains of high street fashion shops based in the UK - I'm deleting them from the list. Violetbeau (talk) 23:39, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

...and now I'll add Gok Wan to the list! Violetbeau (talk) 22:42, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can an administrator please amend [[Paul Smith]] to [[Paul Smith (fashion designer)|Paul Smith]] as the current link goes to a disambiguation page. Thanks Bazonka (talk) 15:03, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I just created my first main page for fashion designer Yoon Ahn and I was wondering if someone could give me feedback! I am still in the process of cutting down some redundancy but would love to hear any advice. Also, I wanted to include her in the list of fashion designers but I'm stuck between South Korea and Japan--she is a Korean-American designer but her fashion history is deeply rooted in Japan. Please let me know! Crohbar (talk) 20:12, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Unless there are objections, I think all redlinks should be removed. Clubmarx (talk) 16:11, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, on its face, redlinks shouldn't be included per WP:LSC. Clubmarx (talk) 16:47, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Racconish Tk 16:57, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

List vs category

[edit]

The reason I ask, is that I think this list is now redundant when the category pages serve the same purpose. For example, there are categories for Argentinan/Australian/Austrian/Bahrani fashion designers and presumably equivalent categories for all the other countries.

I glanced at Category:Australian fashion designers and counted 46 names on there, and there are only 25 on this page in the equivalent section. I think that to list ALL the fashion designers on Wikipedia who have an article is going to be an impossible task to maintain. If there are 21 Australian designers missing from the list, how many hundreds of American designers are missing?

Would it make sense to link directly to the relevant category under each section, as most people creating new articles for designers know to add a category, but probably don't know this page exists? I've been creating fashion designer articles for years and I don't think a single one of my designer articles is listed on here... am gonna try and fix that now. Mabalu (talk) 01:04, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just added a number of missing names (at least I did find several of mine already listed!) and kept spotting more and more obvious omissions. Maintaining this properly and keeping tabs on the designers who get new articles added daily seems like it'd be a full-time task... certainly not one I'd want to take on on top of working through Index of fashion articles solo... Edith Flagg

[edit]

She seems to have been born in Romania indeed [1], but studied fashion in Vienna and then moved to the Netherlands (at age 19) before going to the US. (She was also Jewish and was imprisoned in a concentration camp.) It's rather silly to call her a Romanian fashion designer; I don't see evidence she was ever active in Romania in that capacity. And she became a US citizen. Someone not using his real name (talk) 18:58, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'll agree with you that it is not a perfect system - but it is at least consistent. People who will try and argue that someone should be listed under about fifty locations because they worked/lived in/travelled to dozens of countries during their career cannot disagree with a place of birth. It helps keep the list straightforward with one entry, one name, one place. By the rationale above, some people would say we should list Edith Flagg four times - under Romania, Netherlands, Austria, and the United States - and if we did this for every person on the list, it would rapidly expand the list to unmanageable, ridiculous proportions. I don't think anyone is saying being born in Romania makes her a Romanian fashion designer - just that that's where she was born. Mabalu (talk) 19:08, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notable criteria for entry

[edit]

If the issue is notability then what needs to happen on this page is some sort of reference because it is hard to say what is notable. Are these designers that exist in a specific country, or designer brands that exist in a specific country? --Inayity (talk) 15:21, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

They are designers. Not brands. Not companies. Not labels, although if there is enough biographical information on a designer/founder in a company/label article, then a link is appropriate. The list is sorted by designer's place of birth which, although problematic in cases such as Manish Malhotra (born in London, more active in India), is generally a good rule of thumb for sorting. Mabalu (talk) 15:32, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You will find a whole new world when you learn to discuss with establish editors rather than shooting off the hip. After posting the link, I was actually going to revert myself. As I felt like the brand did not quality. This is why discuss first, shoot last.--Inayity (talk) 15:35, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This page has a LOT of spamming and problematic editing and joke entries. Someone recently added Jesus Christ. Every few days at least someone adds redlinks or links to personal websites/pages. As I explained to you on your talk page, which you chose to ignore, your editing behaviour LOOKED suspicious - suddenly, an article about a London jazz band had info in it about a South African fashion label? There were no sources. It looked REALLY dodgy and set off several red flags all at once Mabalu (talk) 15:39, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I will squash it and move on. Because I have reverted people b4 in error.--Inayity (talk) 15:41, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Names who arguably belong elsewhere.

[edit]

This is just a thread to quickly record some of the names who, arguably, belong elsewhere on the list other than their place of birth. I know I established the place-of-birth rule, as a very simple and easy-to-understand rule, but I can see how it leads to arguments and controversy. The Manish Malhotra edits are a case in point. Each name should only appear ONCE on the list, so this is to determine (by consensus) where they belong. Some people identify strongly with their place of birth, regardless of where they were based; others - such as Jean Muir, who was very proud of being Scottish (although English-born) - are explicitly identified with their nationality even if born elsewhere.

While a small fraction of the potential shifts, these are four of the most obvious and (in my view) least controversial suggested shifts. Please add further names for consideration in the replies.

  • Sybil Connolly, born in Wales, worked in Ireland where she is considered one of Ireland's greatest fashion designers.
  • Manish Malhotra, born in London, based in India.
  • Jean Muir, born in London, of Scottish parents, although based in London, was a very proud self-identifying Scot who actively fundraised for the National Museum of Scotland, who also hold her archive.
  • Ruth Tarvydas, born in Germany, based in Australia.

And yes, this was inspired by a recent attempted move of Mary Quant to Wales - given that Quant was not only born in London, but was also pretty firmly based there professionally, and is considered the poster girl of the 60s London young fashion scene, it seems a no-brainer to keep her under England. Mabalu (talk) 22:57, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

For example, see the above argument for Edith Flagg, born in Romania, but based in USA. Someone not using his real name makes compelling arguments for her case. Mabalu (talk) 23:03, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, please move Sareh Nouri to designers in the US. She was born in Iran but has lived in the US since she was a child. She started her bridal company and still operates in the US. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 100.8.254.126 (talk) 14:13, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Notability

[edit]

So what's the criteria for inclusion on this list? Do people have to have had a runway show? Because it seems that almost every rapper has his/her name on the list. It's hard for me to imagine Jay-Z designing any clothes himself. I feel like he probably just overlooked the business side of things. I haven't looked into this however and I feel maybe non-obvious designers should have a reference or something. Also if Jay-Z, Pharrell, Wu-Tang Clan, etc. are added then every designer from every tiny fashion label such as H&M, Target, Threadless, etc. should be added in my opinion.

To be included in this list, we must have an article about the person. And to have an article, the subject must satisfy WP:GNG, which requires that there must be multiple reliable independent secondary sources discussing the subject in detail. Msnicki (talk) 16:19, 7 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
