Use of misnomer "the Hobbit triology"
[edit]The article says "In The Hobbit trilogy, Sting does not bear the inscription".
I think perhaps someone meant to say "Lord of the Rings trilogy", but I don't want to change this unless the facts line up correctly. Was there an inscription on sting in the Hobbit and not in the Lord of Rings trilogy, or vice-versa? If so, the article should be changed accordingly. If the inscription was present in both The Hobbit and throughout L.O.T.R. then this line should be removed altogether.
Requesting that someone who can attest to the actualities of this make the change. I just don't want to go changing the article due to misconception or erroneous information on my own part.
Moved
[edit]Moved from Sting (sword), for consistency with other xxx (Middle-earth) articles. The old history is still accessible. --Ed Poor 07:41, July 25, 2002
Mithril?
[edit]Was Sting made from Mithril? -- Akajune 13:15, December 17, 2003
- Someone has indicated that it was. Can someone provide support for this assertion? Tempshill 07:26, 4 Jan 2004 (UTC)
- I went ahead and removed the claim it was made of mithril. If someone can cite support then feel free to change it back and note the support. When Aragorn and Gimli saw Frodo's mithril vest for the first time in FotR, they were astounded at the "kingly gift" and noted that Frodo had been carrying around under his shirt "the value of the Shire and everything in it". If Sting had been made of mithril, they would have been similarly astounded the first time they saw it, and Frodo wore it openly. -- Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons Tempshill 07:34, January 4, 2004
Gladius comparison
[edit]I've removed "It is also worth noting that the model of Sting closely resembles that of the Roman shortsword, the gladius" from the arcticle, as Sting quite evidently has a crossguard. ◄ИΞШSΜΛЯΞ► 09:02, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
Image
[edit]I think a picture of the sword Sting would be a nice addition to this page. User:160.7.126.231 15:55, February 20, 2007
- I agree. User:160.7.126.130 15:56, February 20, 2007 (edit) (undo)
Shelob
[edit]According to the Shelob article, Shelob doesn't die from Sting; her fate is unknown. I don't have time to change it right now. -Phoenixrod 22:53, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Dagger or Short-Sword
[edit]> Is Sting a dagger or Short Sword? It seem's a little large for a dagger. Carl Sixsmith 16:33, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
In the original Hobbit Cartoon movie, Bilbo specifically refers to it as a dagger as he shows it to Gandalf and the Dwarves.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.172.100.96 (talk) 08:47, December 11, 2009 (UTC)
When Bilbo finds Sting in the troll cave, it is clearly referred to as an elven dagger, not a short sword. It might seem large for a dagger, but remember hobbits are far smaller than humans. TheALittley (talk) 04:33, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
It's a long knife for an elf, but for a waist-high hobbit it would be proportional to a standard one-handed sword. 174.102.243.129 (talk) 13:58, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
24 inches is very long for dagger, perhaps it should be classified as a short sword. Early 16th century katanas were often 24 inches, As well as Roman Gladii. Timothy Perseus Wordsworthe (talk) 06:49, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
- The sword isn't 24 inches long though, that's a Peter Jackson invention, we don't have an exact length. GimliDotNet (Speak to me,Stuff I've done) 09:36, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
Samwise's Ownership
[edit]I cant remember when/if Sam ever gives Sting back, but the article implies it is given back to Frodo shortly after his imprisonment in Cirith Ungol when we know Sam keeps it at least until the Ring is destroyed MRG 010 (talk) 22:25, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- Frodo gets sting back at the Field of Cormallen, but only agrees to wear it for ceremonial reasons. It is not clear from the text whether he continues to keep it afterwards. It would have been left behind with the rest of Frodo's belongings and inherited by Sam when Frodo leaves. GimliDotNet (Speak to me,Stuff I've done) 09:39, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
