Talk:Slingman
Shouldn't this article be located at sling, since it primarily concerns slings rather than slingmen (slingers?). --LMS
In ancient warfare, the preeminent antipersonnel weapon was the sling.
I don't think that's true. The Persian infantry certainly had lots of slingers and archers, in what proportion I don't know, and it seems reasonable to suppose that related civilizations like Assyria and Media had the same. But these also relied on cavalry and on auxillaries equipped with javelins. Other peoples tend to use javelins and spears most of the time, except according to Drews in the late bronze age when chariot archers dominated. The Greeks thought range weapons were for girls, and the Romans typically used them as auxillaries. All this seems to make the statement somewhat untenable.
